New York City Animal attack lawyer

An New York City animal attack lawyer understands there are few things more frightening than being attacked by a dog.  Animal attacks can severely injure and traumatize the victim. The injuries are more likely to be fatal if a child is involved in an attack. If the attack is unprovoked, the owner of the dog can be held responsible for the attack in many states.  For the attack to be considered unprovoked, the victim must not have threatened the dog or caused it to attack in self-defense. It makes no difference where the attack took place or if the attack is the first for the animal. Some states, however, allow the dog "one free bite"--meaning the owner is not presumed to know the dog is dangerous until an attack has occurred once.  An animal attack lawyer can advise you on your state's laws and what your rights are as a victim.

To help prevent the possibility of an animal attack, follow these basic safety tips:

  • Don't approach strange dogs.
  • Don't bother any dog while it is eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies.
  • Don't try to pet a dog until you have let it see you and smell you.
  • Don't leave children alone with any dog.
  • Don't be aggressive with a dog, stare it in the eye, or run from it.
  • Do stay still if a dog does attack.
  • Do roll into a ball to protect yourself if a dog knocks you down.
Owners obviously have a responsibility to try to minimize the possibility of a dog attack.  The following tips are just a few of the things dog owners can do to prevent an animal attack:
  • Get your dog spayed or neutered.
  • Keep your dog's vaccinations up-to-date.
  • Train your dog to obey voice commands by taking it to obedience classes.
  • Don't leave babies or small children with a dog unless there is an adult with them.
  • Don't allow your dog to roam.
  • Don't teach your dog to play roughly.

If you are the victim of a dog attack, seek medical attention immediately and try to determine the owner of the dog.
